The
most convenient, and one of the most accurate methods of determining
body composition is with BioAnalogics bioelectrical impedance
analysis system. This method of determining the amount of lean
vs. fat tissue is based on the principle that impedance to an
electrical flow of an applied current is related to the volume
of the conductor (i.e., human body) and the square of the conductor's
length (height). The results reflect the greater electrolyte
content of fat-free mass and its greater conductivity of electricity
compared with that of bone and fat tissue. This method works
simply by attaching small electrodes to the wrist and ankle and
passing a safe, nondiscernable current between electrodes. It
is noninvasive (unlike fat calipers), convenient and inexpensive
(unlike hydrostatic weighing).
The BioAnalogics system is the
only body composition analyzer to receive a patent from the U.S.
and Canada, issued based on the algorithmic approach to analysis
of bio-impedence data which provides population specific variables
and more consistent and valid results. No other manufacturer
may use, or claim to use, this unique approach. In seconds you

fat in pounds, percentage of lean mass and lean body weight in
pounds, basal/resting metabolic rate, recommended weight and

The BioAnalogics system has undergone
extensive validation compared to the gold standard of hydrostatic
weighing at the University of Southern California, and has been
found to be as accurate as hydrostatic weighing. The accepted
test/retest variance with hydrostatic measurements is ±2.5%
when compared to itself. The accepted test/retest variance for
the BioAnalogics system is less than ±.5%! Moreover, by
including specific anthropometric (body) measurements into the
algorithmic formula, the standard of error measurement of the
BioAnalogics system reduces from ±3.3% to ±2.8%,
which is comparable to, and just as accurate as hydrostatic weighing.
