Free-Spotter

Return to Product Reviews

Free-Spotter is a patented product that will find its use in any gym and is a vital training aid for the home trainee. Highly affordable, you can attach this device to overhead ceiling beams, joists or on a power cage. We attached ours on a cable crossover, as shown in the photo to the left (when not in use, the bar sets atop the crossover or can be detached). For our purposes, the ropes simply tie on the top beam of the pulley crossover with a bowline knot - the more force on the knot, the tighter it gets. The ends of the ropes, as seen in the left photo have weights hanging on their ends, to keep the rope taut.

The photo to the right is a closeup of one of the rope clamps. The rope feeds down through the clamp and when the control bar (see diagram below) is squeezed, the clamps open to release the rope for unobstructed squatting, chest presses, overhead presses or any other barbell exercise (a dumbbell kit also is available).

Besides the Free-Spotter's affordability, this device has many potential uses. The most obvious is the freedom to train heavy on your own without fear of being trapped under a bar. The second use is the ability to set the bar at any height, a pitfall of many power racks that reposition the catch hooks in six-inch increments.

The third benefit is related to the second. In effect, imagine squatting, deadlifting or chest pressing full range for a pre-determined number of repetitions. You then can stop the bar at any point... say, 12-inches from lockout in the squat... and continue with some top partials or half-reps. Once you reach fatigue, the range of motion then can be shortened even more for quarter reps. Or, simply set the bar at an appropriate height for heavy half or quarter right away, and then every workout you can increase the range of motion by fractions of an inch for long-term "range of motion micro-loading."

Some of the features of the Free-Spotter include

  • Extreme ease of set-up and use
  • A maximum safe working load of 1000 pounds and a breaking strength of 2000 pounds
  • Ability to set up the Free-Spotter nearly anywhere
  • The ability to fine-tune the exact location of the bar for proper unloading or body positioning
  • The ability to limit the range of motion of the bar at any position
  • No backward or foreward movement (racking or unracking of weights) with squats or bench presses, among many other exercises

Proper mounting methods and instructions are provided, together with the necessary equipment to get started. Highly recommended, for further details visit www.ShermWorks.com
