It is obvious that music plays an important
role in all our lives, and that includes acting as a motivational
force to sustain an exercise program and to train hard during
exercise. Some people prefer not to exercise to music, but a
vast majority, if provided the choice, appreciate and prefer
upbeat music to act as that motivator and "distractor of
discomfort." This much we do know.
The remaining decision will be
where music equipment should be purchased, including stereo systems
and PA systems for announcement or class/group instruction purposes.
The first error is to shop at a local department store, since
lower-end equipment will not last long, often does not have the
"power" to perform well, and will produce inferior
quality sound. Consequently, it is vital to investigate companies
that specialize in sound systems specifically for fitness facilities.
We recommend highly that you visit www.FitnessAV.ca,
a company that can help its customers decide what equipment is
needed for any facility's specific purposes, as well as the size
and architectural layout of the facility, from small one-to-one
centers to commercial gyms several thousand square feet in size.
The I.A.R.T.'s performance and
testing center boasts JBL Control 28 professional speakers
and Yamaha Natural Sound components (5-CD changer and
receiver). The clarity of a quality system is a must in exercise
facilities because of bare walls and metal equipment, and for
that reason we wanted the best that was appropriate for the size
and purpose of our facility. We previously used a portable "boom
box" cassette player that cost about $120 and the difference
in sound quality and the effect of that sound quality to motivate
clients is like comparing apples to oranges. Although some
of our clients prefer no music, many others appreciate a quality
sound system and exercise far harder and tend to fatigue less
rapidly because of it. This is a psychological factor that cannot
be ignored when the issues of optimum results and enjoyment of
exercise for years to come are at hand. Download the report
on music and motivation.
