Fitness Professional's Guide to Musculoskeletal Anatomy and Human Movement

Return to Product Reviews

One of the best books (with CD companion) we have reviewed on the subject of anatomy and human movement is the Fitness Professional's Guide to Musculoskeletal Anatomy and Human Movement. It is one of the best because of its ease for learning and the quick reference of various topics included. The book begins with a section on terminology, followed by the anatomy of bones and joint actions. When you delve into the section on muscles, the page layouts have a logical flow, with a section each for description, joint crossings, body action, blood supply, insertion, origin, and nerve supply. Each muscle, no matter how small, is in color against a black and white background of the skeletal system, making even the multi-layered muscles of the lower back and neck obvious in location. The next section deals with movement analysis, such as the "hip-leg abductors" making reference to the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, tensor fascia latae, and the sartorius. Now it is possible to find whatever muscles are involved in any type of human movement simply through a quick search. Moreover, the section on movement analysis includes exercise examples that describe what is occurring among different muscles during different actions, e.g., when the arms are moved "down and out". Further movement analysis is provided through sporting activities, including baseball throwing and batting, archery, basketball shooting, football throwing and kicking, golf driving and putting, racquetball, swimming, tennis serving, and even daily activities such as painting walls and gardening. Included in the book are dozens of quiz questions and blank templates to draw muscles, to put your knowledge into practice. The companion CD would exceed anyone's expectations, with diverse information on muscle actions and exercises that would have to be seen to be appreciated, together with hundreds of video clips and test questions (sample screen shot top right). In effect, the contents of the book come alive on your computer screen! For those science students who work on laptops, the CD is an invaluable resource that is a must have. Highly endorsed, visit www.Exercise-Explorer.com for details.
