Impulse by Sports Beat

Return to Product Reviews

As part of the I.A.R.T. Standards, we require that our instructors use a heart rate monitoring device, particularly with those over age 40, for safety and productivity reasons. Such a device also serves a purpose with athletes who perform intense circuit-type resistance training, in order to account for their upper heart ranges and to avoid an oxygen deficit prior to muscular fatigue. What we have noticed and heard from our instructors is that traditional heart rate monitoring devices are intrusive and cumbersome because of the chest strap, a device that wraps around the ribcage, just below the pec line, in order to transmit heart rate signals to the instructor's watch. Another problem is that chest straps must be affixed with an elastic strap, to accommodate different sized clients; a strap that gets soaked with sweat and must be replaced for each client for reasons of sanitation and comfort.

Fortunately, Sports Beat has solved these problems with an ECG accurate watch called Impulse, a device that does NOT require the use of a chest strap! The watch is worn by the client, and when certain buttons are pressed, the client completes the circuit. This watch is as accurate as any traditional monitoring device, and includes time of day/daily alarm, heart rate memory and recall (recalls the last 20 readings), lowest and highest heart rate reading indication, and with a light that provides night vision. Other features include a pacer mode, a chronograph mode, lap recall for 42 laps, a count down timer, and dual time zone. And without the use of a chest transmitter that involves an elastic strap, a few wipes with alcohol lotion (available at your local drug store) makes this device ready for the next client. As a side note, the use of ECG gel, also found at your local drug store, increases the heart rate's transmission signal even more, so that there is no need to add droplets of water that may dry up, or hoping that the client will sweat enough to transmit a signal to the device.

The Impulse watch is very affordable, and it can be purchased in bulk wholesale for retail at your local fitness facility, if so desired. A recommendation is to include the cost of the watch as part of every client's personal trainer package, so that there is less work in cleaning an in-stock watch after each use. We encourage you to visit www.cardiosport.com and discover a different and superior approach from the traditional chest strap monitors.
