I.A.R.T. Personal Trainer Certification Frequently Asked Questions

"Should you choose to become a part of the growing number of personal trainers on the training landscape, be wise, be responsible, be the best. You and your clients cannot afford anything less. The one personal trainer certification that guarantees complete trainer knowledge, understanding and performance is I.A.R.T."

Dave Draper, Mr. Universe, http://davedraper.com

"If you are interested in becoming a certified trainer utilizing a sane, safe and rational approach to exercise, call the I.A.R.T." Mike Mentzer, Mr. Universe

Q. What is the I.A.R.T. all about and why should I take one of your fitness instructor courses?

A. The International Association of Resistance Trainers, which specializes in clinical exercise procedures, was established in 1995 as a result of failed services within the personal trainer industry. Primarily, most courses are based on nothing more than quick weekend exams consisting of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blanks, and short essay questions that reflect 'memorize-from-the-book' studies and an organization's training philosophy. In one sense this is appropriate and ideal for most commercial gyms whose fitness instructors really are membership sales agents who perform mediocre instructional services. For those who wish to raise the bar on standards and operate smaller quality studios or 1-2-1 services, there were few viable options.

That is where the I.A.R.T. steps in, and it is important to realize that we do not sell certification exams. We specialize in accrediting independent fitness instructors who come to own a highly sophisticated fitness instruction training system that involves various tools of application and problem solving not to be found elsewhere. It is known as Fitness Logistics(tm). After all, it is not an issue of high intensity training (HIT) vs. high volume training (HVT) or periodization, but how exercise practice is to be performed in a scientific environment, how to develop and maintain a client case study, how to communicate exercise technique logically, etc. You learn this system through extensive and challenging in-field assignments and live case study requirements to validate your educational experiences... to provide you skills and knowledge that will separate you from other fitness professionals in the field. This process then extends into the area of ethical and productive marketing, a sorely lacking commodity that is vital for any successful fitness professional and one that you can have now! (For those who do not wish to instruct and prescribe fitness for other people, you still can benefit from our standard Fitness Clinician course.) In effect, no matter what 'style' of exercise you implement or promote, you can integrate that 'style' within our procedures; we provide the shell that consists of processes and operations of scientific conduct, whereas you provide the detail of how you train clients within our apprenticeship assignments.

"The I.A.R.T. and it's certification procedures are state-of-the-art. In a world replete with so many fitness organizations and certifying methods, it's refreshing to see one based on valid scientific research, comprehensiveness, and realistic implementation. Those who accept the challenge and adhere to the principles of the organization and its certification standards will be in an elite class of fitness professionals."

Tom Kelso, Strength and Conditioning Coach for Saint Louis University

POSITION STATEMENT: SynerGenics(tm) is the I.A.R.T. philosophy that states: "The logical objective of fitness prescription is to implement the least stimulus to achieve the greatest response relative to an individual's needs and goals that are dependent upon his or her abilities, limitations and psychology." In effect, the extrinsic factors (exercise, nutrition, and sport psychology prescription, as well as other environmental concerns) must reflect the intrinsic or genetic factors of the individual. SynerLogistics (PDF download) is the I.A.R.T. system of fitness investigation and application that considers the individual as the primary determinant, or the "hub of the wheel" (as per the Principle of Individualism), upon which the application of the remaining Theory of Prescribed Exercise(tm) principles are dependent. In sum, all prescriptive factors coordinate synergistically to meet the genetic aspects of an individual in question, and whereby these prescriptive factors are discovered through a logical and scientific process that you can own today!

I.A.R.T. Two-tier Certification/Apprenticeship Program

To clarify our process, we are the only organization that tests its professionals through a means of standardized testing followed by an apprenticeship program so that one's ability can be demonstrated by way of in-field expertise and evaluated accordingly, as is done with medical doctors and tradespeople. It also is similar to a person who obtains a driver's permit, who later obtains a driver's license after a certain degree of experience and final evaluation.

Fundamentally, we are not a typical "certification" company. Our courses have been compared to post-secondary studies in their intensity and complexity. What we have done is developed a two-tier process:

1. After studying our education materials, you complete two standardized tests (general fitness theory and special groups) that provides you the credentials of provisional Certified Personal Trainer.

2. Once certified through step-1, you have a designated time in which to complete in-field assignments by way of an apprenticeship (you can work on your own and do not require the participation of a health club). Once completed, your designation is upgraded to a Certified Fitness Clinician(tm)

We have chosen the route of in-field assessment for the reason explained in an ancient Chinese proverb: "Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand."

Nearly every organization indicates that it offers the 'best' in materials and courses. We won't bother stating that cliche. Take the I.A.R.T. challenge and discover for yourself why our catch phrases are "certification for active minds!", and "Anyone can show you how... we teach you WHY!" Our courses come with a money back guarantee if you do not agree that they are they best certification experiences after achieving your Fitness Clinician credentials.

Most important, while other companies focus mostly on exercise and nutrition 'trivia', we focus on strategic methods of planning, experimentation, comparisions, and evaluations. Our methods allow fitness professionals to establish benchmarking criteria, i.e., an ongoing process of investigation and studying practices and measurement that produce exceptional results based on predetermined standards; no matter what the training philosopy is!

Be More Than a Personal Trainer... Become a Fitness Clinician(TM)! Invest In and Own a Unique Learning Experience!

Now You Can Own and Experience the Most Comprehensive Curriculum: Most organizations offer a curriculum based on anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, with a general overview on nutrition, exercise prescription, and other related aspects. Really, their educational process is nothing more than a textbook of random information and memorization. The I.A.R.T.'s focus is to provide methods to analyze, problem solve, and to restructure exercise and nutrition programs to optimize an individual's potential and objectives while interconnecting the process and concepts. Big difference! A person can memorize the latest anatomy and exercise physiology book, but doing so will not give him or her the skills to be an accomplished fitness instructor. It's similar to a scientist who understands the function and intricacies of an engine and combustion, then expecting him to be a top-notch mechanic. Most importantly, all of our courses require hands-on case study application, so that you can train in the field to earn your credentials while tackling components on exercise theory & practice, nutrition, sport psychology, exercise injury prevention, and marketing your expertise.

Think of it this way: Our direction and requirements far exceed what most people think of as a personal trainer certification, yet you are not required to attend university for several years to learn about how to apply scientific investigation in the field of fitness science. In fact, some of our consumers have education degrees in the area of exercise science, who have claimed that our learning materials are far superior for practical in-field work. What this means to our students is a superior learning experience through innovative approaches that cannot be met through traditional fitness certification methods, to provide you a destinctive and prestigious learning experience and unique professional capabilities.

Further, our clinical fitness courses provide convenience in more than one way. Besides allowing you to sign up and take the course where you live, on your own time, you are provided several templates to help you develop client case studies, to gather data for analysis, and more!

"IART meticulously expounds on the basic principles as no other source of information I have been exposed to before and in a way that they need to be integrated, measured and continuously adjusted so that you can be assured of a successful exercise program. This is where IART separates itself from the pack."

Brian Erickson, Personal Trainer of the Year 2000

"I have been a student of physique enhancement for over twenty-years and have not come across the intensity and breadth of material found in all of the I-A-R-T publications, videos and courses. The underlying logic is so refreshing and "with it" that it should be considered mandatory learning to maximize client potential and enjoy financial success as a fitness professional."

Vincent S. Andrich, Contributing Writer, EAS Supplement Review, 4th Ed.

IART Standards, Guidelines & Ethics bookYou Acquire Professional Updates and Professionally Unique Information: We offer many ways to keep you at the top of your profession. The first is a private marketing website only for certified I.A.R.T. Fitness Clinicians(tm); it deals with topics that go beyond our Fit Marketing book. We also have our annual publication Fitness Science Annual, a journal that covers dozens of articles on the latest thoughts on exercise, nutrition, and sport psychology science. Most importantly, you have access to our expansive Standards, Guidelines, and Ethics book, which contains extensive details on operating a private business and fitness facility, together with performance evaluation criteria, project management and planning methods, etc.

"I received my copy of the Standards book yesterday and let me tell you - it is an awesome piece of work. Way above anything I have read involving facility standards and operations. Nothing like it on the market." Chuck Rainey, MS, CFP

You Get Continued, On-going Support: While other organizations may boast about having "an operator standing by to help you," chances are that person is not qualified to answer your questions. Think about it: If your question extends beyond the materials that make up the course, the only person who likely can help you would be the one who WROTE the course materials, or someone of equal knowledge. What do you think the chances are that the 'top' person will assist you directly over the phone or via e-mail? With the I.A.R.T., you're guaranteed to have a 'top' person assist you each and every time, including the I.A.R.T.'s Director of Education.

We Offer You Quality and Flexibility of Study: With the I.A.R.T. you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars in travel expenses to take a quick weekend crash course based on memorized information. Rather, you are provided ample time to study and integrate the principles and derivatives within our system. Our courses require a hands-on case study and a practical (via video taped sessions) that can be done at your convenience; a case study and practical that are the most stringent in the industry to make you the most qualified possible!

You Won't Experience Any Hidden or Continual Costs: You pay only the fee you see listed in our Personal Trainer Certification Courses section. That is a one-time fee and we work with you until you pass to our requirements (within allotted time frames). We even provide you reports on your progress - what you're doing right, your weak areas, and direction for improvement. Most other organizations simply provide a passing or failing grade with no explanations or direction. And we do not require continuing education credits that cost you money. Our process is demanding enough that you will be a proficient Fitness Clinician(TM) once completed. By obtaining our annual publication, Fitness Science Annual, you will be kept updated on the latest findings and be notified of fraudulent practices.

Q. In a nutshell, what is the I.A.R.T.'s philosophy in regard to fitness in general?

A. As it pertains to exercise, The International Association of Resistance Trainers believes that one should perform the least amount of work to produce an optimum response relative to that individual's needs, goals, abilities, limitations and preferences, and while safe training practices are applied accordingly. Fundamentally, our prime directive is the continual development of methods to help you maximize results relative to your goals or the goals of your clients. Most organizations speak of individualism and maximization, then they recommend 'canned' programs of 1+ hour workouts, with no clear direction toward maximization. Perhaps some individuals need 1+ hours of activity, but there are many who do not! In effect, your clients often go through the motions, as they perform set after set without trying to gain the most from what is being prescribed; and therein lies the difference between quality and quantity. As important, both nutrition and psychology have to be considered in the grand scheme of things if a person wishes to achieve his or her goals successfully. And for you, the serious fitness professional who wishes to market yourself, proper business practices and methods of promotion are necessary, an aspect you will achieve through our system.

Q. Is the I.A.R.T. a recognized organization in the fitness industry?

A. Recognition refers to the formal acknowledgement conveying approval or sanction. Consequently, the I.A.R.T. is recognized since we are acknowledged by the Canadian Federal Government in the capacity of an educational institute. There is no such designation or status in the United States or in most other countries for fitness education bodies. And we are accredited through the Fitness Standards Council and through the Better Business Bureau.

Therefore, it often comes down to the philosophy of the gym (of who it acknowledges). For instance, if a gym conducts its own fitness accreditation practices, or promotes the generic and mediocrity that abounds this industry, then it would not recognize the I.A.R.T. Our philosophy is based on the individual and clinical application of objective fitness ideology.

Do consider this: To be certified through the I.A.R.T., and to uphold our standards, requires extensive case study application with clients and specific, standardized instructional methods. This is much different from the approach provided by most fitness instructors and through most gyms. In effect, we educate you on how to lay out the 'red carpet' for clients and treat them with a clinical, highly individualized approach. As a result, our fitness clinicians tend to work for 1-2-1 studios, operate their own 1-2-1 studios, train clients within their homes, or work independently in gyms (via on a commission basis). Hence, they do not have to be concerned about the lower standards of any gym or what fitness courses it requires or demands. In fact, some of our personal trainers did work for gyms and were morally forced to quit shortly thereafter. The assembly line mentality challenged their higher standards and ethics to the point that they would rather quit their jobs and pursue independent options than to continue with sub-standard practices. And something else to think about: if you have the desire to operate your own fitness-oriented business, there is far more money and individual achievement to be earned.

By the way, if your state or provincial government has established specific guidelines as to who you must be certified through, and the I.A.R.T. is not on the list, please e-mail us with appropriate contact information and we will do our best to educate, inform, and work with the specific government office or official in question.

Also note that other persaonal trainer organizations certainly recognize the I.A.R.T. in that we are monitored closely and our ideas/standards adopted (stolen?) all the time. For several years our most challenging course took at about one year; since 2001 we required a detailed case study to be part of our fitness clinician course process; and the designation of our instructors is Fitness Clinician(TM). Now, one of the leading organizations has created a new course whereby part of the course requires a 'case study thesis.' Coincidence? Perhaps, but we have been claiming the importance of in-field work, and the need for a case study to demonstrate competency for quite some time, and now our voice is finally being heard.

Q. What are the credentials of the head I.A.R.T. members?

A. Our founders, organizers, and personal trainer certification advisory board vary in education and experience to assist you best. Some have PhDs, some are MDs, others have their masters in science and degrees in physical education. Some are even experienced bodybuilding competitors, and all are authors of books and magazine articles.

Q. Can I claim your course costs on my income tax?

A. In Canada you can, and we provide you the necessary income tax forms and receipts. In the United States, you can do so only if the course enhances your current occupation (e.g., fitness instructor, physiotherapist). However, if you presently work at an occupation outside the exercise sciences (e.g., lawyer, truck driver), then you likely cannot. Residents of other countries will need to check with their government body for federal laws, regulations, and conditions.

Q. I'm interested in some of your course materials, but I don't want to take the exam or pay for the whole course.

A. No problem. Our materials are available separately; visit our Fitness and Exercise Books section for individual titles, or the Fitness Science Library section for the resources provided our instructors.

Q. I already have some of the materials and want to take one of your fitness exams. Do I have to buy those materials again?

A. Generally, no. We do suggest, however, that if you own a relatively old edition of the materials to upgrade since some exam questions may pertain to newly-established research and facts. If this is the case, we will provide you new materials at a substantial discount (our cost). Otherwise, when you order, simply tell us what you own and we will apply an appropriate discount to the total amount. As well, if you own the Fitness Science Library, then you are fully up to date in regard to the quality of our materials. We then update with new information yearly by way of our Fitness Science Annual.

Q. You have two levels of fitness certification (Fitness Clinician and Master Fitness Clinician). What is each about and where should I begin?

A. Not every person who undertakes fitness certification desires to train others or become a 'technical wizard'. Consequently, we designed two levels of certification, depending on how far you wish to take the profession and how hard a challenge you prefer. The Fitness Clinician(TM) course is based on a general practical (videotaped session), and with an extensive case study (you can use yourself as the case study subject). You also will learn to analyze nutrition programs and apply some basics of sport psychology and injury prevention.

Our Master Fitness Clinician(TM) course pulls out all the stops and requires an additional case study of a particular nature, much more thorough application of training prescription, more experiments and in-field assignments, and a video practical that is more complex. Further, there is more extensive application of nutrition and injury prevention studies, and you learn and put into practice many key marketing tools to help your fitness business grow. If you're looking for the ultimate challenge, this is the course!

The good news is, if you complete Level I and move to our Master level, you receive a discount since you own some of the materials and have completed some assignments that carry over to the higher level.

Q. Do any of your fitness courses take into account nutrition?

A. Both fitness clinician courses have a nutrition component, requiring you to analyze and prescribe a new program for your client (or yourself). On that note, we realize that doing so is illegal in some states, and so this would be done for our benefit to test your knowledge and ability and the information would not be relayed to the client. The Master level includes further nutrition assignments such as an essay on some fraudulent aspect, rating popular diets for safety and effectiveness, and some case study questions. As simple as this sounds, it truly is a challenging component of our system and a separate nutrition course is not offered as a result.

Q. I can't afford to take any of the fitness courses. Do you offer installment plans?

A. You can invest in the materials first, then invest the remainder of the fees when you're ready to take the course and when you can afford to do so. Consider that if you take three months to read and fully comprehend our learning materials, then that allows you that time to save for the investment of a course. However, unless the exam process is paid in full, we do not release the exam, since this process involves private and confidential learning methods.

Q. How long does it take to receive my package? I'm in a hurry to get started.

A. Your materials are sent Expedited Post in Canada, and this means 5-15 business days at most (in most instances). For other countries, we ship via surface and insured (unless preferring a more expediant manner). The waiting time is approximately 4-12 weeks in most cases. Do note that we cannot send packages registered or Express to some countries, because of Canada Post limitations, and so delivery can be a bit longer and without guarantee of arrival, although rare instances. If this is the case, we will offer to provide expedited shipping at an extra fee or we can send the materials on CD so that everything can be shipped in a regular envelope, and there would be less risk for theft.

Q. How long does it take to an I.A.R.T. complete a fitness course, and how long do I have?

A. That depends on your ability to read and absorb the materials and system of application, then complete the course. Moreover, each IART course offers different time constraints depending on the difficulty. Our basic level can be done in 6-8 months, although we provide upward of 15 months; the Master level will take closer to 8-12 months and we again offer 15 months. First submissions (you may have to redo some assignments or aspects within an assignment) should be within three months with the apprenticeship completed in the remaining time. Failure to make a first submission within the specified times results in an administration fee of $150 Canadian for an additional six months work time. If you do not complete a course in the maximum time frame, including the extension necessary to complete additional work to meet our standards, full administration (exam) fees will apply to continue and to re-enroll. Rarely does this happen and this policy was put in place to motivate our students to work hard and diligently toward accreditation. In effect, we want only serious students to consider our courses and to work toward their credentials as if under time constraints that are similar with college and university studies. If you do not think you can handle the rigors of our courses, we suggest you purchase the learning materials and study until you are ready. See our Personal Trainer Certification Application Form for initial registration and understanding of our requirements if you undertake one of our courses.

Q. Do you conduct on-site testing for your fitness certifications?

A. Only the DI-Chi (progressive martial arts) certification requires on-site evaluation because of the complex nature of the learning requirements. Otherwise, our course processes are too multi-faceted and lengthy to offer weekend on-site courses. You are required to complete case studies, apply critical thinking and analysis techniques, work with and construct client exercises and nutrition programs and complete detailed reports. This cannot be done in a short period, perhaps making our courses the most difficult and demanding available, yet the most rewarding. We do, however, offer a two-day one-to-one Personal Training Certification instructional training clinic that may interest you and that can enhance your learning experience and expertise.

Q. If you don't do on-sites, does that mean you don't have a hands-on practical when I take one of our fitness certifications?

A. We do have a hands-on practical. In our courses you are required to obtain a video camera and tripod (which can be rented for a small fee from most camera/video stores if not owned), and to record yourself interacting with a client. You cover a sample workout and all the technical application and skills of specific exercises based on the I.A.R.T. Praxis method. In this manner, regardless of where you live in the world, we can evaluate your ability to communicate the various techniques and biomechanics as presented in our learning materials and in our Maximum Technique DVD. Do note that failure to meet minimum standards will require you to redo the video, but you will not be charged an extra fee for us to grade future submissions if completed within the necessary time constraints. When finished you truly will be an expert who can command greater respect and fees than typical fitness professionals.

Q. What passing grade do I need to obtain my fitness certification?

A. There is no preset passing grade. You must complete all assignments to our satisfaction and standards. We will provide you feedback on each assignment, and indicate what areas/questions you need to do further work on, and provide you guidance and assistance to steer you in the right direction.

Q. If I don't pass the first time, do I have to pay a fee to finish any remaining requirements?

A. No. For a one-time fee, we work with you until you pass to our specifications (within the allotted time provided). To date no one has ever done any particular assignment or a component of an assignment more than three times. A third attempt at some aspect of the course is rare since we provide exact assistance in problem areas.

Q. Once certified do I have to spend hundreds of dollars and travel for continuing education credits?

A. No. The I.A.R.T. believes that once you achieve your credentials, it is up to you, as an intelligent, rational individual, to maintain your education and learning. This can be done through direct experience as a Fitness Clinician, or by reading pertinent materials, including Synergy Annual, I.A.R.T.'s official journal. This publication contains several informative articles on exercise, psychology, and nutrition science, and it is free with your continuing membership. Further, after being certified, instructors are required to submit one of the following with their dues: a yearly Success Story that consists of a report, a current training/diet regimen and related photos of a client in question (posing, standing, or exercising). The Success Story can be expanded into a Case Study (as per the fitness clinician course requirements) and entered into our IART Fitness Clinician of the Year contest. New students must complete a Case Study (to obtain certification) and they will be entered into this contest automatically. The second option is to submit an article on some aspect of exercise, nutrition, or sport psychology. If you prefer writing an article, but can't think of a topic, one will be assigned to you for research and development. Some students take an I.A.R.T. course for their own information and experience and not to work as a fitness professional, and so some students opt to submit an article rather than a success story.

Q. What do I get for my annual membership participation?

A. You receive a new certificate (extending your credentials for an additional year), free internet listing as a featured instructor, free membership fees to the Fitness Standards Council ($49 US value), a copy of Fitness Science Annual on CD, and e-mail/telephone assistance throughout the exam process.

Q. Once certified through your organization, does that mean I'm guaranteed a job?

A. No one can guarantee that, including universities and colleges. Your ability to secure employment is based on your ambition, previous background, the employer's requirements/standards and a host of other elements. We merely provide you the tools to effectively and scientifically design and analyze training and nutrition programs, then to market your expertise as a fitness clinician. However, we will also help you as much as we can. We provide an instructor database for client contact, and have our standards manual and marketing manual available to help you if you decide to run an independent business. We are also working hard to gain increasingly more recognition and respect within the fitness industry.

Q. Sounds good so far. Can you summarize some of the benefits of being certified as a fitness clinician through the I.A.R.T.?

A. Primarily, we are not a typical personal trainer 'certification' company. Our courses have been compared to post-secondary studies in their intensity and complexity. On that basis, if you're looking for a challenge, to be truly qualified and competent, look no further. I.A.R.T. courses require hands-on case study application, i.e., working with one or more clients. In essence, you must obtain practical experience before becoming accredited as a Fitness Clinician(TM). Other organizations work oppositely, giving you a certificate based on memorizing answers or theory, then they let you loose in the industry! The other related aspect is that we work with you until you pass to our satisfaction, and we provide written reports on your weak points so that you know what to improve upon. In this regard, we help steer you in both theoretical and practical experience in multi-faceted areas. After all, if you had no practical experience, and were allowed to train people, would you know what your mistakes were? How many months or years would pass before you realized your mistakes? Most companies simply pass or fail you with no explanation. In effect, with the I.A.R.T. you learn to reason your recommendations and to become fully accountable. With the I.A.R.T. it's not enough to prescribe 'x' sets, 'y' reps, and 'z' frequency. You must know why you are doing so. Our Master practical is also the most complex; it requires you to integrate skill learning, exercise transference, fundamental, intricate, and subsidiary instruction in a systematic and highly logical manner, to give you multi-level teaching ability to accommodate client needs and to communicate body mechanics properly.

Other I.A.R.T. Personal Trainer Certification benefits include:

  • No Continuing Education Credits (CECs) that will cost you money. Our standards and process is rigorous enough that once you are accredited, you know what you're doing. We also believe that education can continue simply by purchasing our materials and obtaining our yearly annual, Fitness Science Annual and while completing free assignments.
  • You learn to apply information rather than memorize information, and this means reasoning your choices for client specificity and not following concrete guidelines as an organization's founders have deemed ideal.
  • We offer an optional 1-2-1 clinic experience so that you can learn and apply technical application better, as well as to learn motivational and exercise methods first hand.
  • We offer our fitness instructors exclusive materials and web links, including Praxis (our technical instruction method), our standards manual and marketing articles, guaranteed to increase your income potential and professional ability. Our other materials are also the most intensive available, based on logic, and deductive and inductive reasoning, with full explanations behind every recommendation... explanations as to the whys and hows of exercise and nutrition science.
