Soma
is about exercise injuries, rehabilitation, and special populations.
This book covers a wide range of diverse topics, including body
mechanics, tissue injury mechanics, proper movement, injury sites
and characteristics, application of RICE, how to instruct the
injured, psychology of the injured, forms of rehabilitative exercise,
general assessment and measurements, and much more.
The
Nature of Injuries
Injury prevention requires an understanding
of what an injury is or how it comes about. Several factors are
responsible for injury, such as energy absorption, impact, inflexibility,
muscle imbalance, overuse, rapid growth, structural vulnerability,
and fatigue. Then we need to consider the cause and effect aspects,
such as age, anthropometrics, conditioning, disease, drugs, the
environment, equipment used, experience and skill, fatigue, gender,
genetics, human interaction, nutrition, psychological status,
and pain tolerance. Connecting all these aspects to the various
types of tissues (muscle, cartilage, bone, etc.) then discloses
precautions and rehabilitation procedures.
Rehabilitative
Exercise
Soma teaches
the most fundamental method of rehabilitating acute and chronic
injuries, including methods of relaxed passive movement, forced
passive movement, free form exercise, manually assisted exercise,
and resisted exercise, with an extensive section on general assessment
and measurements, and psychological aspects of the injured and
how to deal with this class of client.
