Not everyone wants to train to be a martial
artist, yet there is something about the coordinated body movements
that makes this method of conditioning appealing to millions
of people. To date there are two versions of martial arts style
of exercising: Dynamic and Slow Moving. An example of dynamic
martial arts conditioning is Tae Bo, which consists of thousands
of quick repetitions that yank and jerk at the joints and tissues.
Conversely, a slow moving method would be Tae Chi, which is more
of a medication activity than something that will develop and
strengthen the muscles and cardio system.
With DI-Chi ('DI' refers to dynamic
isometrics, and 'chi' means ultimate), fitness enthusiasts receive
the best of both worlds, in that the workouts are vigorous and
intense, and yet easy on the joints because of slow, controlled
movements.
"I enjoyed this book
so much I decided to get certified as a DI-Chi Instructor! This
is an interesting and effective art that provides an extremely
challenging workout in minutes. Ideas, moves and routines are
clearly explained and the compass based photos bring it all together
nicely. Mr. Johnston displays a rare combination of analytical
ability intertwined with creative flare, sure to put a fresh
spark in your exercise experience."
Andrew Shortt, Fitness Clinician of the Year 2004
The
DI-Chi Method
DI-Chi is
about mimicking weapon and open-hand combat movements, but while
utilizing resistance, such as dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells,
body bars, weighted vests, Clubbells, ankle weights, etc. If
you have never tried performing a kata (a sequence of martial
arts movements) with a dumbbell in each hand, or utilizing a
barbell like a bo (4-6 foot pole/stick for self defense), then
you are in for one of the most unique workouts ever! Yet, because
movement is slow, while the trainee attempts to contract all
the muscles of the body in various planes, the activity is safe
and low-impact... all the while progressively loading the body
for an unlimited challenge!

Functional Training
Those who believe a Swiss ball or wobble
board are required for 'functional training' are way off base.
Any activity that enhances function is a functional exercise,
whether using a machine, free weight or just body weight. Nonetheless,
those who perform slow-motion kicks, strikes, and blocks while
bending, twisting and turning the body with a weighted implement
in DI-Chi fashion are doing far more for overall function
than any of the latest gimmicks on the market today.
DI-Chi
Certification
Although we provide the DI-Chi book
and companion CD separately, fitness instructors who teach classes
may be interested in our certification that involves this unique
and popular method of exercise. Click
