PT Legal Defensibility
One of the reasons that IHRSA is recommending companies become third-party accredited (via NOCA) is to provide 'legal defensibility.' However, what exactly does this mean? The National Board of Fitness Examiners prepared a PDF statement in this regard, which you can download by clicking here. In a nutshell, the 'legal defensibility' claim refers to the standards in which the certification test is conducted, in that it is done in a certain manner. That's it! One of the problems is that students of 'accredited' certifications believe that if they have a NOCA accredited certification that it somehow protects them with clients and lawsuits. Not even close. This type of accreditation does not speak of individual PT standards, nor the quality of the education process delivered by the certification companies... only the manner in which the test is given. Therefore, there is no special protection given to a PT if he or she happens to hurt a client while implementing methods taught, or otherwise, via the certification company in question. In order to demonstrate your particular standards in a court of law, you would need to belong to an organization that has established safety practices, such as The Fitness Standards Council.

Nautilus Biography
Speaking of HIT, William Jones, the son of Arthur Jones, is writing a biography on the history of Nautilus and his father's work in the industry. As a brief background, Nautilus Sports/Medical Industries Inc (Nautilus) was started by Arthur Jones in 1968. Originally the company was called Arthur Jones Productions, but the name was soon changed to Nautilus. Some people have credited Nautilus with starting the fitness craze of the 1970s, while others have said that it came along at the right time; perhaps both are correct. The book William will will attempt to write analyzes the growth of Nautilus from one man's invention, to a name that became synonymous with exercise. This book will also tell some of the behind the scenes stories of what happened at Nautilus, and of the business practices of Arthur Jones. To the best of William's knowledge, the facts to be presented are true, as they happened, though some people may find them hard to believe. William has begun work on this book, but will complete it if there is enough interest and support... you can e-mail him at ExerciseGod@netscape.net.
